I have strolled dark palace halls
and moonlit garden paths.
I have paced treacherous roads
and roamed illuminated courses -
Backstreets and main avenues,
sprawling boulevards,
Sinister alleys and ornate piazzas
decorated plazas and dead ends...
All one solitary road
on my journey to you.
I have lived in the dreams of others
while they did not inhabit mine
A few hearts have been disappointed
and many times my own
I have laughed and cried,
been blissfully happy, deeply sad,
I have been purified in Purgatory,
and sat in silence in Limbo,
I have caught a glimpse of Paradise,
and been perched at the gates of Hell
My eyes have seen the Promised Land
yet I have been denied access...
All on my way to you.
I have been saintly and holy,
and a liar, a cheat, a thief and a whore
I have been accepted, rejected,
neglected and expected...
My repertoire has not been anemic
But now the dance is ended -
and all the pipers have been paid
I am not proud of all the things I've done
nor have I sent postcards from all the edges
but shame is not appropriate
For my way to you was paved...
And I would not change one solitary thing
For all these things have made me
who I am for you today.
It all happened on my way to you.
