"Black and White"

Dona Lou Pearson is an icon of my website, being the very first contributer, giving me feedback, and being the first poet interview back in January, 2000. She has many poems posted on poetheart.com and graciously continues to contribute to my site.  - poetheart 07/05/01

Does God see us in Black and White,
Or mottled shades of gray?
What thinks God of all hypocrites,
Wafflers and doubters?
Does He blame us for inherent weakness,
Or hold us in contempt for primal fears?

When desiring, in our lust
We take a lover, or take in hand,
Does fire demand to be quenched
In Hellfire?

When any mortal questions,
Or is motivated toward
Untoward action,
Is this God's mocking joke:
To fashion us of dust,
Demanding that we be steel?

When, as silent Cowards,
Demanding no justice,
We follow unjust men
In folly, ignorance or apathy,
Does God recompense
Offenses with dire Wrath?

Some religious wizards would say
Resounding "YES,"
Who themselves bless
With blood-stained hands

The Wiser One absolves
To solve this Black and White dilemma
Of Sin and Righteousness:
While Death
Is what we hope to earn,
It is by faith, by Grace alone,
We live.
