"Devil's Debtor"

I find this new poem by Dona Lou strange and wonderful...  - poetheart 05/27/02

Lightning flashed in an indigo sky
Thunder growled and grumbled
The earth shook underneath her feet
As to the ground the raindrops tumbled
The wind at last began to calm
The storm rumbled, and then was gone
Came breaking of the frigid dawn
Those first rays of illumination
Fraught with brutal revelation
As startled from her torpid sleep
To sorrowfully face the light of day
The woman began to wail and weep
She had not meant so far to stray
From that safe world of yesterday
She had not meant to leave behind
The fortress walls around her heart
So well-designed to guard and keep
Mad interloping dreams apart
She'd never known a love so strong
Existed, nor passion, or such longing
Calm after wind and rain and thunder
Heart walls, now blasted all asunder
No longer keeping dreams at bay
Love's fiendish marks would fade away
But forever after, there would be
Hell to pay
