"Inconsequential"

Back in early December, 2001, I posted a poem called "Re: Inconsequentiality." Dona recently confided that the poem was actually a sequel to this one, which I had never read before she sent this to me a few days ago.  - poetheart 03/11/02

Today I longed to call you
Against my own better judgement
Such foolishness does not become me
It diminishes my dignity
Where is my pride?
Such emotion I have spent on you
Kisses, tender touches
Every vow of love
Now mocks me
My heart races
In breathless fear...
You do not call
We haven't spoken in weeks
I can only think one thing now:
I have been abandoned
How typical...
You probably never meant to hurt me
I was just "there"
That I should be
So inconsequential
Is the worst hurt of all
