Dona Lou's most recent poem captures the elusive wonderment we all feel at this time of the year and well expresses the fleeting moments of the season. - poetheart 05/13/02
As summer settles in once more
With a sweltering blanket covering outside
When scorched by the overbearing sun
All birds and bees retreat and hide
Into a shady place from the sun's face
Children laugh gleefully, and in water splash
When winter's icy needles prick the skin
And frigid air demands that all stay in
To build a barricade against the cold
Bedtime banking logs inside the fireplace
Where we sit and contemplate the flames
A gathering of warm embers, glowing ash
When storms revolve around a gun-metal sky
The scenery wrapped in a soggy gray cocoon
Lightning-furious flash, thunder crash
Insane wind howls at a hidden moon
Impatient raindrops pound upon the roof
Harshly hail is hurled from up on high
Beating the trees with furious lashes
May I remember one simply lovely day
May I not soon forget…one perfect interlude
Spent with friends in happy conversation
Kindly breezes blew, above an eagle flew
Flowers painted our picnic's backdrop
A placid, pleasant, Springtime afternoon
Perfect weather, that sometimes so sweetly visits
And then quietly departs, all too soon
