"What I wish..."

This new poem by Dona Lou Pearson was received today.

I wish I could be the one to help you
the one to whom you turn for solace
In your darkest night, and the comfort
Of my loving arms would shelter you
So willingly, if I could be the one

I wish that I could be the one in Springtime
Who would plant roses in a little garden
Tomatoes and peppers, and a honeysuckle vine
The one who would knead bread, fashion a table
Underneath a sunny window, listen to the music
Of the forest, of the birds of Summer and dine
In your presence, laugh with you at the comic antics
Of squirrels and rabbits, dogs and children

I wish that I could be the one to wonder with you
At the beauty of Autumn, to see the last leaves
Of summer turn to gold and red and rust, and to fall
Under the spell of your voice in the cool, crisp air
I would love to be the one who shared the peace of
A Winter snowstorm, to help keep the fire going
The one to warm you with my smiles and with my love
To share a pot of coffee and lively conversation
The one to share your space, to share your hopes

I wish that I could be the one who would promise
An undying affection and loyalty, the one who would
Be there for you in the years of declention and aging
Years made Golden only because you would be there
I wish I could be the one you turn to for comfort
The one who carries the sweet burden of your cares
With you, and helps to solve the problems of your daily
Routine, I wish I could be the one to love you till
The last thought, the last breath of my body must go
I wish I could be the one you love forever, as I love you.
