"Clock Tower"

So many readers have inquired about this poet and her work during her nearly two year hiatus from poetheart.com. I am very happy to welcome back both Eunice Irwin and her poetry. I am pleased to tell you that Eunice has submitted nearly a dozen new poems!  - poetheart 05/09/03

Clock tower bells - deep tones they speak
My walk on this campus, marked as they peak
At hourly, quarterly, half-hour times
My day like a yardstick, divides by their chimes

Majestic bell tower, I hold you in awe
Your strong walls of rock, are sand-colored straw
A bulwark of strength, your dignity sure
Bespeaks of mortality, life insecure

For each bell that tolls, vibrates to my bone
Reminding this helpless, insecure gnome
That time flies with wings, awaiting for none
A musical tribute to God's will for some

For all that will hear, and respond to these notes
Take stock of their life, for in space do we float
The bells mark our journey, to pace our short days
Determine, then order - our faith and our ways

Clarion tower, I don't understand
If you mark time so well, I can't comprehend
One day you'll be silent, a whisperless gong
N'ere again striking bells, in time's endless song
