Soliloquy for the Solitude of Solo Strollers

By Richard J.Amoroso

to see them all, solo faces in a sea of the unknown
from a sidewalk cafe, under an awning, sipping a beer
for on this rainy night, as solitude taps me on the shoulder
reminded am I, that on the sidewalks tread the unknown

who are they? who cares.....for New York is filled with ghosts
walk quickly, avoid the puddle.....as the masses move in unison
cabs, horns, and neon.....for nighttime has no peace.....
staring out at the moving crowd - hurry, scurry, a place to be
forget the beer..........need some coffee instead.....
flicked the butt, just missed a soul, bet he never noticed

red lights, a gentle rain, this awning better not leak
"Yes Ma'am, I'll have some coffee - light and sweet"
(like you )
not bad - not bad at all.....

is she expecting a tip? this is New York-leave one or else.....
faces.....oh, the faces, New York's best surprise
I know not a one..........good, lets keep it that way
glad it's a warm night, makes the rain seem not so bad.....

a triage of hookers, selling their souls
bet the cops with make 'em move
she looks at me - I look at her.....for a second, just maybe.....
vintage visions I see it all - "Hey!!! gotta a match?"
"I don't smoke and neither should you".....
great..........a sidewalk sermon
this is New York - everyone has an opinion on everything
and like it or not, you're gonna hear it......
gently, I can hear it now.....the rain..........oozing -
off the awning.....off the scenery.....off of my eyes.....
"more coffee, sir?"..........."Nah, I've had enough"
and endlessly, on they come.....
"check please".....
